Careers in Org Psych

Industrial and organisational psychology is an interesting and rapidly growing field of practise. In this series of interviews, we ask org psych practitioners in four different fields (academia, consulting, government, and industry) about what they do, what they enjoy most about it, and how anyone interested might get their foot in the door.

Academia – Interview with Maree Roche

Professor Maree Roche is a practising academic in organisational psychology, focusing on the topics of leadership, wellbeing, and kaupapa Māori in the workplace. On top of teaching and writing papers, she also acts as editor for Stress & Health, an international A-rank journal.

Consulting – Interview with John Eatwell

John Eatwell is a consultant with 25 years of experience, and a chair on various esteemed boards, such as the New Zealand Psychologists Board and the Institute of Organisational Psychology. His current working role is as Director for Strategic People Group, a consulting agency that uses positive psychology to improve work outcomes

Government – Interview with Sofia Garcia

Sofia Garcia is a chartered I/O psychologist who completed her postgraduate education at the University of Auckland in 2016. She balances her work as Senior Organisational Psychologist for the New Zealand Police, and as Director for her own consulting business, Value Work. 

Industry – Interview with Jessica Xu

Jessica Xu studied I/O psychology at a postgraduate level at the University of Auckland. Since then, she has a breadth and depth of experience, both as a consultant and as an in-house organisational development partner. She currently works as Leadership and Talent Lead for the Bank of New Zealand.
